Moorundi Health Centre is a landmark community project bringing together Ngarrindjeri health services within a facility that is culturally grounded, welcoming and connected to people and place. The landscape plays an important role in the overall project, providing more than an external setting for the facility. It creates spaces for gathering, connection, reflection and respite, while encouraging interaction with the natural environment and contributing to a calm, welcoming environment for patients, staff and the wider community.

The landscape construction scope included extensive earthworks, approximately 1,000m² of exposed aggregate concrete paths, detailed paving for yarning areas, turf areas, garden beds and a comprehensive automated irrigation system incorporating moisture sensors to improve water efficiency and plant health.

Local materials were also prioritised throughout the landscape. Native plants and trees grown specifically for this project by Ngarrindjeri Ruwe Empowered Communities are planted throughout, locally sourced limestone boulders were incorporated into the garden spaces, complemented by large local timber logs that provide informal nature-play opportunities and tactile elements within the outdoor areas. Raised Corten steel garden beds add structure and visual interest while providing functional growing spaces for the community. These elements sit alongside carefully considered planting, lawn areas and gathering spaces to create a landscape that feels natural, purposeful and connected to its surroundings.

The completed landscape brings together durability, functionality, natural materials and cultural connection. It provides spaces for people to connect, gather, reflect and engage with Country, supporting the broader purpose of the Moorundi Health Centre as a place of care, belonging and community.
